The Lenten Lecture Series
This year's Lenten Lecture Series took place from Friday, February 16th and continued each Friday during Lent through Good Friday, March 29th.
2024 Lenten Lecture Series: The Seven Sorrows of Mary
The prophet Simeon foretells the suffering that the Blessed Virgin Mary would endure throughout her life because of her Son, “This child is destined for the rise and fall of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted (and you yourself a sword will pierce) so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” Luke 2:34-35. Because of Mary’s motherly and sinless love for her Son, she was united to her Son in His suffering more than anyone else.
Undoubtedly Christians have prayerfully reflected on the sorrow of the Blessed Virgin Mary from the beginning of the Church. The historical record of the devotion goes back to A.D. 1239 and the founders of the Servites (Order of the Servants of the Blessed Virgin Mary) who took up the sorrows of Mary, standing under the Cross, as their primary devotion.
We invite you to deepen your heartfelt sorrow for the sufferings of Christ and His mother.
